Fitzgerald-Echenique Update

Pitt was scheduled to have two big men visit them this week. Unfortunately Andrew Fitzgerald didn't make the trip for an undisclosed reason. However the soft-spoken Greg Echenique was able to make the trip.

From all accounts he enjoyed his visit. Though this isn't his first trip to the Petersen Events Center, he attended the Pittsburgh Jamfest last year. The Jamfest is an AAU tournament, and it made a nice impression on the young man from Newark, New Jersey.

Echenique looked the full 6'8" he is listed and had some good bulk to him. He would fit in nicely with the Panthers as he is very intelligent and comes across that way.

The St. Benedict Prep post player was very impressed with the progress Dejuan Blair has made since they played against each other in a basketball camp.

I think the most important person for Pitt in the recruitment of Echenique is Mark Nordenberg. It's clear this is a kid with his head on straight, and wants to go to a college for the classes as much as the hoops.

He's be a great fit for us..but going to be a tough battle.

- Souf, I agree with your general feeling . . . I think is a kid where you don't have to overly worry about the glitz and glamour . . . it is going to be about whether he really wants to go school and get an education from Pitt and how comfortable he is with the coaching staff . . . as compared to other places of course.

- He would be a great fit . . . very coachable . . . good kid . . . and others would want to play with him . . . but, he would be a great fit practically anywhere too.

Echenique is a really solid guy . . . maybe not the greatest talent in the world . . . don't get me wrong, a sure top 50-75 type guy with room to go upward . . . but he just is a guy who should be really solid for you . . .

- I think Blair may actually be a real selling point for Pitt here too . . . Blair is the type of kid that other guys want to play with . . . Pitt has a few of those types of guys on the roster now and on the way too. Good stuff.

Yeah, he's not an AAU spoiled type of kid...which works in our favor. We do much better with HS coaches and system recruits than stars.

Atleast he got to watch an entertaining game...and with Blair having a career day, no less.

Tough to follow the Duke vs UNC visit, though.

- Souf, I don't know if Pitt has had a star recruit since Vonteego Cummings . . . so, I can't say that Dixon cannot do good really well with a star.

Blair and Brown at the least have chances to develop into big time stars . . . so, I think we will see what Dixon can do with true starpower very soon.

- On the team for a moment: I think Pitt may be on the verge of a run . . . Blair has upped his play and is averaging over 15 PPG over the past 6 games . . . Young's offense gets better every game (and it is pretty good already) . . . Fields is coming into form and now can fully practice . . . Benjamin is consistently around 10 every game . . .

If Pitt can get some consistent points out of Ramon and Brown, they are going to be able to score with anyone.

And judging from the D, they might need to . . . but, it is good to finally have that capability. 98 points is a lot, even against DePaul . . . no one can deny that Pitt has guys that can score . . . and if they are coming into full gear, they are very dangerous.
