Pitt Notes

Some ramblings in the world of Pitt...

-Ashton Gibbs, Sterling Gibbs, and Travon Woodall were all in NYC for the Big East tourney. They weren't guests of the Panthers, but they certainly pulled for them.

-More on Sterling, a top-rated prospect, he is extremely interested in becoming a Pitt Panther.

-Also in attendance for the Big East tourney was Greg Echenique, along with his coach. Remember the St. Benedict big man recently visited Pitt during the DePaul game.

-It appears that Georgetown has rocketed up the rivalry scale, not just with the fans, but with the players as well.

-Rumors of Brad Wannamaker's transfer appear to be unfounded. Mike Cook has taken him under his wing and has really been a leader for the Panthers.

What year is Sterling Gibbs? I am assuming that we will take another PG between his and Woodall's recruiting class.

He's a 2011 prospect. Yeah, they would have to look for another PG.

We did a profile on Gibbs in Feb., it's still up if want to see it.

Great to see all of that recruiting stuff. I REALLY want Sterling Gibbs to be a Panther, he's gotten rave reviews in everything I've read on him. He's only 5-9, but he'll certainly grow he's just a frosh (2011). He's actually the perfect age to be Pitt's next PG, he'll come in when Woodall's a senior then take over as a sophomore.

Also good to hear about Wanamaker, I'm expecting big things from him. And Cook is a tremendous asset, I'm so glad he transferred in to the program.

Pittbball,

I don't think Pitt wants to be caught in a position like they were this year, ie Fields injury.

I'm not saying they need a top-rated pure PG, but maybe a player like Wanna, who is a natural 2, but can play the 1 as well.

Correct me if I am wrong but isn't his brother Ashton who is coming to Pitt a 2 guard who can play the point? I also heard the Juco Dixon coming in can run the point if need be. I think they are starting to cover themselves in that area.

From what I've read, not seen mind you, I don't think Dixon is an option at PG on the D1 level. He seems to be a shooting guard only.

As for Gibbs, he's a 2 guard. He struggles to create off the dribble according to some scouting services.

Think of Ronnie Ramon at point. He'll protect the ball, but he won't add much in offense, when he's on the point.

When he's off the point, look out.

- From my understanding, Dixon can play 1 and 2 because he has handle, but he should be better off of the ball. He is supposed to be a very intense defender that plays with a level of passion.

- From seeing a little of Gibbs this year, I think he can handle some point . . . he has developed his left hand, which was his major weakness. He will end up having to beat Wanamaker and Dixon for playing time at the 1 during his second season. His first season, it should be all Fields and Woodall at the point . . . with maybe Wanamaker and Dixon if it is completely necessary.

I think Gibbs will present a much better option than Ramon on the ball when it comes to scoring . . . he is a better athlete and should end up being in the condition he needs to be play on the ball . . . he won't take care of the ball as well though . . .

- I think Pitt is moving more towards having multiple guys on the floor that can carry the ball up and set up an offense . . . in two years, Pitt should have at least Wanamaker, Gibbs, Robinson, Dodson and Patterson . . . all guys that can bring the ball up and get into your offense somehow . . . this is not to say that the PG won't handle most of the duties . . . it is to say that I think Pitt is going to play a little quicker with guys that will take the ball from end to end and finish.
